The morning routine to better your mental health

After World Mental Health Day in 2021, thousands of people across the UK are re-evaluating their own mental health and coming up with ways in which they can make a positive change to impact their mental wellbeing for the better.

And with there being such a strong connection between oral hygiene and mental health, oral health expert Dr Upen Vithlani, a dental professional from MyMouth, an eco-friendly provider of dental products, explains how a simple morning routine can go a long way towards supporting your mental health.

Why is oral health so important to mental health?

A positive oral hygiene routine can go a long way towards supporting the upkeep of your mental health.

On the contrary, poor oral health can exacerbate existing mental health conditions and, in some cases, mental conditions may also result in the development of oral health complications.

To put it into perspective; people with severe mental illnesses are actually 2.8 times more likely to lose all their teeth compared to the general population.

This can be caused for a variety of reasons, such as overzealous brushing and flossing in patients experiencing mania and eating disorders, as well as the abuse of substances, such as tobacco and alcohol for those that use such as a regular coping mechanism for mental health issues.

Furthermore, there are thousands of people in the UK struggling with low self-esteem, with 85% of women believing they are unattractive, and as many as four in five men also thinking they are unattractive.

And many of these issues surrounding self-esteem stem from the appearance of our teeth and smiles, with 45% of Brits saying they don’t feel confident smiling for pictures due to feeling self-conscious about their teeth.

It’s these very issues surrounding our appearance that can drastically impact our mental health, often resulting in varying forms of depression, anxiety, and body dysmorphia.

How does improving my oral health, improve my mental health?

By simply incorporating a few extra steps into your daily morning routine, it is possible to work towards improving your oral and mental health simultaneously.

Acting as an oral gateway to your mind, body, and soul, maintaining the health of your tongue as a vital organ is critical to your enhanced mental and physical wellbeing, and you can do this by practicing the act of tongue scraping.

Using a tool specific for the job, such as the JiBee tongue cleaner, you can gently and effectively clean the debris, dirt, and harmful bacteria from the surface of your tongue which, in turn, can improve your overall oral health.

This is because the removal of the harmful bacteria coating your tongue can result in the reduction of plaque development and decrease your chances of contracting gum disease and cavities.

Cleaning your tongue also has many other benefits, such as reducing bad breath, fighting gum disease and improving sense of taste, among many more benefits.

Additionally, the act of having a go-to, daily routine can help to support the recovery process, as having a solid routine can help with mental health, as they encourage the development of healthy habits, helping us to improve relationships and reduce our levels of stress.

With it taking on average 21 days to form a new habit, such as tongue scraping as part of your daily oral hygiene routine, you can quickly begin to experience the long term physical and mental benefits.

To improve your oral hygiene habits and positively impact your mental health, I recommend following the below morning oral health routine:

1. Brush your teeth for two minutes
2. Floss between your teeth
3. Scrape your tongue using the JiBee tongue cleaner, going from back (or as far as it feels comfortable) to front
4. Swish and rinse your mouth with a gentle mouthwash for around 30 seconds

For many of us, sometimes finding the time to work on ourselves can be troublesome. However, with a simple and easy to follow oral hygiene routine, you can work on your mindfulness and increase your mental health.
